STATE: Government employees pile up vacation time, breaking rules and costing millions/NCTimes

“This is part of the whole milieu of excess compensation packages in the public sector.” Jon Coupal, President, Howard Jarvis Taxpayer Association
“When they cash out vacation days, state workers are effectively getting paid twice—once for the day they worked when they could have been on vacation and, when they retire, again for that vacation day they didn’t use.”
“Employees are paid for their cashed-out vacation at the salary they received when they left the state, meaning that the payments get more expensive for the state over time.”
“Public records suggest the state probably paid at least $100 million, and perhaps tens of millions more, to state employees who exceeded the 640-hour ceiling between 2006-2009, the period examined by California Watch.”

There is nothing new under the sun. Unless boards become the “watch dogs” they are elected to be, the pay-outs continue and administrators are not accountable to the rules. Often administrators don’t educate boards to clearly understand the rules. Legislators benefit from the same mindset. Taxpayers lose.

Californians are faced with a continuing economic crisis and without a reasonable solution available we need to monitor how every tax dollar is spent. Every elected official should be held accountable for their actions.
“Often administrators don’t educate boards to clearly understand the rules.”
It is the duty of every elected official to investigate and educate themselves before they cast blind votes. If the administrators are not providing all of the necessary information then they need to be held accountable too. If elected officials continue with this trend the taxpayers will “lose.”
Because you are a “watchdog” with an undeniable record of integrity and morals, would you please explain how and why the district spent over $313,000 in legal fees last year defending employees?
We can all assume that a large portion of the $313,000 was spent defending the PD personnel including Kevin Segawa, Mark Medina and Ryan Myers.
With the end result of Segawa’s arrest and inevitable trip to jail, Medina caught lying under oath and Myer’s colorful history the taxpayers deserve to know if it was worth it. With over 313,000 spent on legal fees we are all wondering one thing – What is the district hiding?
To make matters worse, the officers who were terminated after reporting misconduct by Segawa, Medina and Myers, which ultimately led to–thus far–Segawa’s fall from grace, WERE initially only asking for their jobs back.
When taken in totality, it is beyond any logic that the MSJC (thanks to Admin and some BOT members) will be paying out even more money when the dust is settled and the “whistleblowers” win their civil suit. One would think, as so-called educators, the Admin (Roger and Irma) would understand the problems they face. Sometimes you just need to know when to cut your losses- especially when you are betting against JUSTICE!
Now the tax payers of the State of California are on the hook for MSJC’s failed policies, failed administration and filed PRIDE!
