Science, technology, engineering and mathematics are highly technical fields requiring high aptitude and proficiency well above basic high school reading and math levels.
The struggle will be identifying those qualified students with high aptitude and proficiency able to meet the rigorous academic requirements of these disciplines. Careful screening of applicants before entry in the program will increase chances of highest outcome performance for the student, grantee and college.
All of these noted disciplines require competent performance in high level mathematics of which few community college students enroll. It would be interesting to know what percent of hispanic students sucessfully complete those courses.
