“Academe, with its rigid hierarchy in what is supposed to be a collaborative culture, is a natural incubator for conflict. Many colleges have learned the hard way that even mundane conflicts can lead to protracted dramas and expensive lawsuits.”
“The legal costs of letting a dispute go unmanaged have increased, driving administrators to try to handle them more efficiently.”

Independent investigations are paramount to an institutions public and internal reputation. Having the same law firm investigate an employee complaint that administration formerly used to deny the complaint is suspect ethics. Some HR departments are known to cause more conflict than resolution, thus escalating complaints and legal expense for the institution. HR should be helpful not adversarial.

Unfortunately, the MSJC PD does not practice what you are preaching, Ann. I have it from a reliable source that the MSJC PD have a long standing history of abusive and illegal labor practices towards employees. My reliable source inside HR also said that a very serious allegation is currently being made against the PD and HR and that this has become a potentially huge lawsuit. Ann, what is going on with the PD? In looking at other posting on your site it looks like they are out of control. It all starts at the top.
