Trustee named to sit on MSJC budget committee

At the June 26, 2008 board meeting, during discussion of the tentative budget, Trustee Kadow asked to sit on the college budget committee and by general board consensus the request was affirmed without further discussion and no comment from the new S/P. The matter was not on the agenda.
MSJC BP 2220 /Committees of the Board
“The Board may by action establish committees that it determines are necessary to assist the Board in its responsibilities. Any committee established by Board action shall comply with the requirements of the Brown Act and policies regarding open meetings.”
“Board committees have no authority or power to act on behalf of the Board. Findings or recommendations shall be reported to the Board for consideration.”
Board members sitting on a college committees do not meet the definition or intent of this BP. Board members having potential for influence and/or micromanagement without established parameters of authority could be intimidating.
In this case, the boundaries of authority appear rather “gray”.
