“A record 1,046 students received associate degrees or certificates, up from 852 students in 2007. College officials estimated about one-third of them participated in the ceremonies at the Ramona bowl Amphitheatre in Hemet. California secretary of Education David Long in his commencement address talked about the important of setting priorities 840 months, the average person’s lifespan.”
Blog:
1,000 students receiving degrees and/or certificates translates into 10% of the enrolled 10,000 Full-time equivalent students meeting the main mission of degree/certificate completion of the California Community College System. MSJC’s current budget of $100,000,000 million dollars translates into a taxpayer cost of $100,000 per student receiving a degree and/or certificate.
Numerous students enrolled through the front door, but few leaving the back door with completed degrees/certificates. Completion rates should become a focused prioritiy within every institution and administrative salaries should be tied to performance in this area. Non-accountability, golden parachutes and local politics have replaced old school accountability.
